Anthroposophical Research WIKI

WIKI MindMapbr

Welcome to the Anthroposophical Research Wiki, an online, user-built resource for the indications of Rudolf Steiner’s spiritual science. As an endeavor of the Initiative for Anthroposophy, the Wiki is intended to become an extensive collection of topical summaries containing all known references of Rudolf Steiner to a given topic. In addition to these indications each Wiki will consist of an encyclopedic entry, the dates of writings/lectures, references to source material, and a categorization of quotations according to their source – published, archival, anecdotal, etc. In creating each Wiki the effort is always to provide enough contextual material that the meaning of an indication speaks for itself as it was originally intended. In this way, both the unique insights and descriptions as well as the various points of view with which Rudolf Steiner approached a given topic can be clearly surveyed and further research of the surrounding material can be easily pursued. The hope is that the Anthroposophical Research Wiki can further a high standard of spiritual-scientific research amongst anthroposophical peers and in such a way that is both rigorous and transparently accessible – a step, if you will, to a proper ‘peer review’ culture in the anthroposophical world.

While anthroposophical activity must certainly transcend a merely ‘encyclopedic’ way of thinking, much of what goes for Anthroposophy in books and presentations ends up being just that: a mere recounting of quotations and/or anecdotes – sometimes unfortunately twisted to support unrelated motives or trains of thought – and the greater facility with which the quotations are referenced, oftentimes the more authority is asserted. But comprehension and a grasp of the living archetype is not necessarily present in such a case. With the Wiki, no matter how developed one’s memory or ‘google-like’ referencing abilities, a factual, summative resource is available to all. People are then aided, but at the same time thrown back on themselves to take their thinking further, beyond the information or the encyclopedic data. Then one lives in the fact that it is the methods and the methodology of Anthroposophy that provide for this spiritually productive activity.

With Anthroposophy, as in any discipline, mastery of the material on its own terms is absolutely essential. In this sense the Anthroposophical Research Wiki attempts to serve Anthroposophy as a free and transparent resource to facilitate this mastery. Anthroposophy itself then presents the prospect whereby, through discovering its methods and methodology, the human being may take the ‘information’ further, transforming it into a living source of knowledge, strength and creative love. Such is accomplished not in libraries, encyclopedias or websites, but in individual human souls. For original work and insight in this sense, the Initiative for Anthroposophy, as a free association of committed anthroposophists, is called to action.

Anyone may contribute to the Wiki; adding to pages, submitting corrections/revisions, or submitting content for new topics entirely. If you have a knack for researching anthroposophical topics, consider becoming a contributor to the Wiki and help it grow! The Wiki began because a few friends found that they had a similar research strategy and desire for arranging material. It was not enough to discover an indication and ponder over it, for every time a new, relevant quote of Rudolf Steiner’s was discovered, a new aspect or insight, a new point of view was opened on the topic. When all this was then taken up a comprehensive survey yielded not just an expansion of concepts but a stronger view of the archetypal phenomena itself. As Rudolf Steiner writes in the preface to Knowledge of Higher Worlds, “the core of the matter does not lie in one truth, but in the harmony of them all.” (GA 10) A presentation of such a ‘harmony of statements’ also has the added benefit of shedding light on the development of Rudolf Steiner’s cultural activity and the birth of the Anthroposophical Movement in relation to the timeline of his biography – at least to a certain extent. Other anthroposophists, spread out across the world, clearly have this interest as well. The founders of the Wiki ask: If researchers are already seriously pursuing their studies along such lines, why not make such a resource collaborative and freely, publicly available?

With the advent of computer technology searching for topical content is easier than ever. The Complete Works in German (Gesamtausgabe) are available as a computer disc and also online. This is an important step. But there remain holes given the fact that still not everything is published and some material remains archived or even rumored to be kept secret. The Initiative for Anthroposophy is strongly of the standpoint that by now Rudolf Steiner’s work should be freely available to all in complete, academic editions, both in print and in electronic format.

Any and all materials and suggestions for a topic are welcome and can be submitted via the form below (or by attachment in a follow-up email).

To create a Wiki, the following procedure often yields the most thorough and best results:

1. Find the German word(s) [translate.google.com] for the topic you wish to research.

2. Search for it in the available resources:

a) The Complete GA disc – if you have it!
b) Search (Suchen) at the Steinerdatenbank.de. Enter the top field and click the “Gesamtausgabe” (Complete Works) button.
c) Search at the Freie Verwaltung des Nachlasses Rudolf Steiners. For the most complete results, use the lower field and be sure to select “GA/BE-Nr., Seite” (order by GA/BE number, page).
d) PDF and Doc downloads at bdn-steiner.ru

3. Crossreference it to the available English volume:

a) RUDOLF STEINER ARCHIVE (don’t forget to donate)
b) Steinerbooks Research Archive (appears to be defunct)
c) Submit or Fund a Translation
 at the Initiative (link forthcoming)

Tip!: For searching through large amounts of text in files stored on your local computer, consider using a research tool with an advanced search functions and previews.

Evernote is one of the best note taking tools out there and you can add your file directories to it making them searchable with previews.
DocFetcher is another great tool which, while it has a slightly less attractive interface than Evernote, it can find and preview text within virtually any document file type.

Please look to existing Wiki entries for examples. Lecture/Chapter The more reference links to the original German resource, the English volume (print and electronic)  AND the specific lecture/chapter the better!
